Leadership 2020 - Choices
It’s June 2020 and what a strange, upsetting, and scary time we now live in. Yet it’s a time that presents us ALL with some interesting choices.
We have a global health pandemic, COVID-19. This has quickly shown how interdependent the world is and it has brought focus and attention to our shared humanity. (We all have a tendency to panic buy toilet roll, ALL over the world). Go figure.
We have global civil unrest based on police brutality and social injustice, directed towards minorities and black citizens.
It feels like a time to reflect and like a time of potentially large scale change. So what should we reflect on?. What can we learn? Who will learn? What WILL each one of us do next? Will we change how we think, speak and act ? Or will we sit idly by and do nothing.
In my lifetime I have not seen the world, experience such a potentially UNIFYING set of experiences before. Yet it feels so fragile.
People feel hurt, society and nations appear fragmented and many feel vulnerable, including Police and Politicians.
Better LEADERSHIP is for sure part of the answer. And if you can’t find a leader worth following, BE a leader worth following.
Everyone one of us has our own STORY and our own choices we can make. For me, as a privileged white male living in America, I am digging into my beliefs and values and asking myself what I stand for. Maybe more to the point what have I sat by for? Next I am asking what can I do?. This blog is just one of my first steps. My next is searching for a way to do more business with black and minority owned businesses. Then I’ll try to take the next step whatever that might be.
As outlined in the model above, personally, I am constantly reminded that good values, beliefs and thoughts begets character which begets leadership. This all affects how we show up to influence the world and what choices we make. The model helps me in my reflections as I do my work, maybe it can help others too.
